The oddities of road signs is making me smile from time to time. Some people at DOT really do have a sense of humor. Some of them are ones not seen too much back East. Signs like "Open Range" meant nothing to me, until I found myself waiting for a herd of Angus to get out of the middle of the road so I could drive by. And those sign that say Trucks take note of step hill or winding roads? Well where back east that might mean a slight incline or decent, out here in the land of the Rockies, they MEAN it. Some of the ones are just plain silly or stupid and worth a laugh, if it were not for the fact our tax dollars were paying for these.
and yes those were bullet holes in this sign
and used as prizes at Bingo too.
Now some lawyer thought this one up.
Now this is a steep hill warning Also the one in Texas, about all State Traffic Warning signs must be obeyed. Well DUH!
MY latest addition to unusual signs was this warning to Bikers and Motorcyclists on the Blue Ridge Parkway in NC
Dan and I have noticed that the states differ on how serious they take Littering. In some states, it is a small fine, some states the fine grows larger. Missouri is the hands down winner in how serious they take it, with a big fine and a year in jail!. They do like to keep their State Beautiful.
We have also laughed at the differing language they use to tell you about the possibility that the bridges and overpasses might be slippery. Arkansas take this one with the addition of the words, IN COLD Weather. Some how being warned Bridge maybe icy when the temperature is over 100 just doesn't make sense! North Carolina with its instructions to "BURN" your headlights with wipers or if riding a motorcycle made me wonder if there was a factory that made headlight bulbs in the State.
Alabama had the least noticeable highway signs to tell you when you crossed into the State. Just about every one we saw was obscured by tree branches or the weeds growing up too tall. Sad too, because it was a pretty state, and one clear night we found out why the license plates have the slogan they do. It was at the height of the Perseid Meteor Shower. I never saw so many stars in my life and I never saw so many shooting stars either. Was an amazing night!
